Computer Running Slow? How to Check Startup Apps, RAM, Disk, Virus and Windows Performance

A slow computer is one of the most common problems for Windows users. A computer may take too long to start, programs may open slowly, the browser may freeze, the fan may become noisy, the mouse may lag, or the computer may struggle when many tabs are open. Many people quickly assume the computer is too old, but often there are specific causes that can be checked and fixed.

A slow computer can be caused by many things: too many startup apps, low RAM, nearly full disk, old hard drive, malware, Windows updates, drivers, overheating, background processes, browser extensions, temporary files or programs that are too heavy for the hardware. To fix the problem properly, do not guess. Follow a step-by-step process.

The first step is checking Task Manager. Task Manager is an important Windows tool that shows CPU, Memory, Disk, Network and GPU usage. You can open it by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Open the Processes tab and check which programs use the most resources.

If CPU stays very high, such as 90% to 100%, a program or process may be causing trouble. If Memory is very high, your RAM may be too low or too many apps may be open. If Disk is at 100%, the computer may become very slow even if CPU and RAM are not the problem. 100% disk usage is common on computers using HDD instead of SSD.

The second step is checking startup apps. Startup apps are programs that start automatically when Windows starts. If many programs start at once, the computer will take longer to boot and feel slow at the beginning. Open Task Manager, then Startup Apps. Disable programs that do not need to start with Windows.

Examples of apps that often do not need to start automatically include Spotify, Teams if you do not use it daily, game launchers, updater tools, unnecessary printer utilities, Adobe background apps and other normal apps. Do not disable antivirus or important drivers unless you are sure. The goal is to reduce startup load without breaking the system.

The third step is checking RAM. RAM is the memory used to run programs at the current time. If you have low RAM, such as 4GB, modern Windows can become very slow, especially with many browser tabs, Microsoft Office, antivirus and other apps. For normal use today, 8GB RAM is a good minimum, and 16GB is better for heavier work.

Signs of low RAM include the computer slowing down when many programs are open, browser freezing with many tabs, and Task Manager showing high Memory usage most of the time. When RAM is full, Windows uses disk as temporary memory, and if the disk is HDD, the computer becomes very slow.

The fourth step is checking storage type. A computer with an old HDD is much slower than one with an SSD. Even if RAM is fine, HDD can make Windows start slowly, programs open slowly and updates take a long time. SSD is one of the upgrades that improves computer speed the most.

If your computer still uses HDD, replacing it with SSD can greatly improve performance. Windows will start faster, programs will open faster, and the computer will feel newer. For many users, SSD upgrade is better than only adding RAM if the computer still uses HDD.

The fifth step is checking whether storage is almost full. If Local Disk C is too full, Windows may slow down. It is good to keep enough free space on C drive for the system to work properly. If the drive is red or almost full, delete unnecessary files, move large videos and documents to another drive, external drive or cloud storage.

You can use Storage Settings in Windows to see what is using space. Common storage consumers include Downloads folder, videos, old Windows updates, temporary files, recycle bin, WhatsApp/Telegram media, games, installation files and duplicate files. Do not delete system files unless you know what you are doing.

The sixth step is using Disk Cleanup or Storage Sense. Windows includes tools to remove temporary files, recycle bin items, thumbnails, delivery optimization files and update leftovers. Storage Sense can be configured to clean automatically. This helps keep enough free space.

Avoid strange cleaning tools from the internet if you do not understand them. Some “PC cleaner” apps promise speed improvements but may add ads, delete wrong items or cause problems. Use Windows tools first or trusted apps.

The seventh step is checking for viruses and malware. A computer can become slow because malware runs in the background. Signs include browsers opening strange pages, many ads, unknown programs, high CPU without reason, antivirus being disabled or files changing unexpectedly.

Use Windows Security to run a full scan. Open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection, then run Full Scan. If you suspect a serious issue, use Microsoft Defender Offline Scan. Also make sure Windows Security is enabled and definitions are updated.

The eighth step is removing unused programs. Unused programs can take storage, run background services, add startup items and make the system heavier. Go to Settings, Apps, Installed Apps, then uninstall programs you know and no longer use. Do not remove drivers or system components you do not understand.

The ninth step is checking the browser. Many people blame the computer when the browser is the real problem. Chrome, Edge or Firefox with many tabs and extensions can use a lot of RAM. Remove extensions you do not use, close unnecessary tabs, clear cache if the browser misbehaves and update the browser.

Untrusted extensions can also be a security risk. Some can read your data, inject ads or track browsing. Use only a few extensions from trusted sources.

The tenth step is checking Windows Update. Sometimes Windows becomes slow because updates are running in the background. This can use CPU, disk and internet. Check Settings, Windows Update. If updates are running, allow them to complete and restart the computer. Leaving updates incomplete can make the system unstable.

The eleventh step is checking drivers. Drivers help Windows communicate with hardware such as graphics, WiFi, sound, printer and chipset. A bad or outdated driver can cause slow performance, WiFi problems, screen freezing or errors. Update drivers from Windows Update or the official manufacturer website.

Do not download drivers from unofficial websites. Fake drivers can contain malware. For laptops, use the support page of the brand such as HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer or Asus based on your model.

The twelfth step is checking overheating. When a computer becomes too hot, it may reduce speed to protect itself. This is called thermal throttling. Signs include a loud fan, a hot laptop, slow performance after several minutes of use or sudden shutdowns.

Overheating can be caused by dust in the fan, old thermal paste, placing the laptop on a bed or surface that blocks airflow, or a faulty fan. Use the laptop on a hard and flat surface. If it is very dusty, take it to a technician for internal cleaning. Do not open the laptop if you do not have experience.

The thirteenth step is checking power settings. Windows has power plans. If the laptop is on Battery Saver or low-power mode, performance may reduce. When doing heavy work, set power mode to Best Performance or Balanced depending on your need. Remember that higher performance uses more battery.

The fourteenth step is checking visual effects. Windows has animations, transparency and effects that make it look nice but can add load on weak computers. You can reduce visual effects by searching “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows” and choosing Adjust for best performance or selecting only important options.

The fifteenth step is checking OneDrive or cloud sync. OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox can use internet and disk while syncing many files. If the computer is slow during sync, wait for it to finish or choose synced folders carefully. Do not sync very large folders if your internet or storage is limited.

The sixteenth step is checking background apps. Some apps keep running even when you are not using them. In Settings, check background app permissions. Disable apps that do not need to run in the background. This can help RAM, CPU and battery.

The seventeenth step is checking services that start with Windows. This is more advanced. Services are system or program processes running in the background. Do not disable services randomly because you may break Windows functions. However, some programs install unnecessary services. If unsure, do not change them.

The eighteenth step is checking disk health. If the hard disk or SSD has problems, the computer may become slow, freeze, show errors or fail to start properly. You can use tools to check disk SMART status. If disk health is poor, back up data immediately and replace the disk.

Signs of disk failure include frequent freezing, files failing to open, Windows taking too long to load, strange noise from HDD or blue screen errors. Do not wait for the disk to die completely. Backup is important.

The nineteenth step is using System File Checker. If Windows system files are damaged, the computer may be slow or show errors. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run sfc /scannow. This checks and repairs some system files. It is an advanced but useful step when Windows shows signs of corruption.

The twentieth step is using DISM if the Windows image has problems. A command such as DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth can repair the Windows image. This is often used when SFC cannot fix issues. Use it carefully and make sure the computer has internet and stable power.

The twenty-first step is checking Event Viewer. Event Viewer contains Windows logs that may show disk errors, driver errors, app errors or system errors. This is more advanced for technicians and IT users. If the computer shuts down, freezes or shows blue screen, Event Viewer can help find the cause.

The twenty-second step is checking the user profile. Sometimes a Windows user profile becomes corrupted and causes desktop or app issues. You can create a new user account and check whether the computer runs better. If the new account is faster, the old profile may have problems.

The twenty-third step is checking a crowded desktop. A desktop full of files, videos, folders and shortcuts can make the system feel heavy, especially on weak computers. Organize files into folders such as Documents, Pictures, Work, Projects and Backups. Do not use the desktop as the main storage for everything.

The twenty-fourth step is checking Recycle Bin. Deleted files may still remain in Recycle Bin and use storage. Empty Recycle Bin regularly if you are sure you do not need the files. This can free disk space.

The twenty-fifth step is checking chat and meeting apps. Apps such as Teams, Zoom, WhatsApp Desktop, Telegram, Discord and Slack can use RAM and CPU, especially if they start automatically. If you do not use them all the time, disable startup and open them only when needed.

The twenty-sixth step is checking printer software. Some printer packages install many unnecessary apps that start with Windows. If you only need the printer driver, you may remove extra utilities. Make sure the printer still works after removing them.

The twenty-seventh step is checking game launchers and updaters. Game launchers, software updaters and background downloaders can use internet and disk without you noticing. Disable auto start if not needed. Also check if downloads are running in the background.

The twenty-eighth step is upgrading RAM or SSD when hardware is insufficient. If you have cleaned everything but RAM is still full and disk is HDD, upgrade may be the best solution. For many laptops, upgrading RAM from 4GB to 8GB or 16GB and replacing HDD with SSD makes a huge difference.

The twenty-ninth step is backing up before major repairs. Before replacing disk, resetting Windows, reinstalling Windows or removing many programs, back up documents, pictures, projects, browser bookmarks, email files and license keys if available. Many people lose data because they repair without backup.

The thirtieth step is deciding whether Windows reset or fresh installation is needed. If the computer has too many problems, malware, errors and unknown programs, a fresh installation may be better than small fixes. But this should be done after backup and when you have necessary drivers, installers and license information.

In general, a slow computer is not always at the end of its life. You can often improve performance by disabling startup apps, deleting unnecessary files, removing heavy programs, cleaning malware, adding RAM, replacing HDD with SSD, updating drivers and keeping Windows healthy.

Remember: do not guess. Use Task Manager to see what is using resources. Check CPU, Memory and Disk. Identify whether the problem is software, storage, malware, hardware or overheating. When you know the cause, the solution becomes easier and safer.

A good computer has enough storage, enough RAM, a healthy SSD, updated Windows, a few important programs, working antivirus and a user who avoids unsafe downloads and untrusted apps.
