Internet and WiFi Keep Disconnecting? How to Troubleshoot Router, DNS, IP Address and Network Problems

Internet and WiFi are essential in modern life. We use them for work, learning, communication, WhatsApp, email, business, online meetings, office systems, video streaming, file downloads and many digital services. However, common problems include internet disconnecting, slow WiFi, devices showing connected but no internet, or computers failing to open websites.

Many people say “WiFi is not working” without separating WiFi from internet. This is the first important troubleshooting step. WiFi is the connection between your device and the router. Internet is the service coming from your provider to the router. WiFi can be connected while the provider’s internet is down. Internet can also be active while your WiFi signal is weak or unstable.

A simple example is this: WiFi is like the internal road connecting you to the router. Internet is the main road connecting your home or office to the outside world. If the internal road works but the outside road is blocked, you may connect to WiFi but fail to open websites. If the internet works but WiFi signal is poor, your device may experience slow or unstable connection.

The first step is checking whether the problem affects one device or all devices. If only one phone has no internet while other phones and computers work, the issue may be with that phone. If all devices have no internet, the issue may be the router, modem, ISP or network line.

The second step is checking router status. Many routers have lights for power, internet, WiFi, LAN and signal. If the power light is off, the router may not be powered or the adapter may be faulty. If the internet light is red or off, the provider connection may be down. If the WiFi light is off, WiFi may be disabled.

Do not rush to change settings before checking basics. Make sure the router is plugged in, the adapter is working, fiber or Ethernet cables are not loose, and the router is not overheating. A router that becomes too hot may disconnect or perform poorly.

The third step is restarting the router correctly. Turn it off, wait 20 to 30 seconds, then turn it on again. Do not press the reset button unless necessary, because reset can erase all internet and WiFi settings. Many people confuse restart and reset. Restart means power off and on. Reset means restoring factory settings, which may require a technician to configure again.

The fourth step is checking WiFi signal. If the internet works near the router but becomes slow in another room, the issue is signal or coverage. WiFi signal weakens through walls, doors, floors, metal, large mirrors and distance. A router placed in a bad corner can leave other areas with poor signal.

To improve signal, place the router in an open area, slightly elevated, near the center of the home or office, and away from devices that may interfere such as microwaves, cordless phones or many electrical devices. Do not hide the router inside a cabinet or behind heavy objects.

The fifth step is understanding 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi. 2.4GHz reaches farther and passes through walls better, but it is often slower and more affected by interference. 5GHz is faster and usually has less interference, but it does not reach as far or pass through walls as well.

If you are far from the router, 2.4GHz may be more stable. If you are close to the router and need higher speed for video calls, downloads or streaming, 5GHz may be better. For large homes or offices, you may need WiFi extenders, mesh WiFi or access points instead of relying on one router.

The sixth step is checking how many devices are connected. A small router may struggle with many devices. Phones, laptops, smart TVs, CCTV, printers, tablets and other devices can overload the network. Also, one person downloading large files or streaming high-quality video can reduce speed for others.

For a business or office, choose a router suitable for the number of users. A home router may not be enough for an office. You can also use bandwidth control or QoS to prioritize important traffic such as video meetings, POS systems or office systems.

The seventh step is checking DNS. DNS converts website names like google.com into IP addresses that computers understand. Sometimes the internet is working, but DNS has problems, so websites fail to open by name. You may see WhatsApp working while the browser fails to open websites properly.

You can try using well-known DNS servers such as Google DNS or Cloudflare DNS. Google DNS uses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Cloudflare DNS uses 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1. Change settings carefully and write down old settings before making changes.

The eighth step is checking IP address. When your device connects to WiFi, the router usually gives it an IP address through DHCP. An IP may look like 192.168.1.25. If the device does not get an IP properly, it may show connected but no internet. If you see an IP starting with 169.254, the device may not be receiving an IP from the router.

On Windows, open Command Prompt and type ipconfig. Check IPv4 Address, Default Gateway and DNS Servers. Default Gateway is usually the router IP, such as 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. If there is no Default Gateway, the computer may not be connected properly to the network.

The ninth step is using ping tests. Ping helps you know whether your device can reach the router or the internet. First ping your router. If the gateway is 192.168.1.1, type ping 192.168.1.1. If it replies, your computer is communicating with the router. If it does not reply, the issue may be WiFi, cable, IP settings or the router.

Then ping an external IP such as 8.8.8.8. If the router replies but 8.8.8.8 does not, the issue may be with the provider connection. If 8.8.8.8 replies but google.com does not open, DNS may be the problem.

The tenth step is checking gateway and DHCP. DHCP is the service that gives IP addresses to devices. If DHCP is disabled on the router or two routers are both giving IP addresses incorrectly, the network may behave badly. This often happens when a second router is added without proper configuration.

If you have a second router, access point or extender, make sure it is configured correctly. If two routers both run DHCP on the same network without planning, devices may receive wrong IP settings. In a normal setup, the main router should be the DHCP server, while the second router should be configured as an access point or in the correct mode.

The eleventh step is checking IP conflicts. IP conflict happens when two devices use the same IP address. This can cause disconnections or communication problems. IP conflicts are common when someone manually sets a static IP without checking whether it is already in use.

If you need a static IP for a printer, CCTV, server or special computer, it is better to use DHCP reservation on the router. This ensures the device always receives the same IP without conflicting with others.

The twelfth step is checking cables. For fiber internet or routers with modems, loose or damaged cables can cause disconnection. In office networks, a bad Ethernet cable can make one computer slow or disconnected. Try another cable or port if you suspect cable issues.

If you use fiber, do not bend the fiber cable sharply. Fiber is more delicate than normal Ethernet cable. If the LOS light on the modem or router is red or blinking, it may indicate a fiber line problem, and you should contact the provider.

The thirteenth step is checking ISP outage. Sometimes the problem is not on your side at all. The provider may have an outage, maintenance or line issue. If all devices have no internet and the router shows internet down, contact the ISP. Before changing many settings, confirm there is no provider issue.

It is also helpful to ask a neighbor or another person using the same provider whether their internet works. If many people have the same issue, it may be a local outage. If only you have the issue, it may be your account, router, cable or settings.

The fourteenth step is checking account status. Some providers disconnect internet when a bundle expires, payment is pending or the account has an issue. The router may be connected but internet may not work. Check your balance, bundle, subscription or service invoice.

The fifteenth step is checking firewall or antivirus. Sometimes internet works, but one computer cannot open websites because firewall, antivirus, VPN or proxy settings changed. If phones have internet but one computer does not, check whether VPN is active, proxy is enabled or antivirus is blocking the connection.

On Windows, incorrect proxy settings can stop browsers from opening websites. Check Network & Internet settings, then Proxy. If you do not use a proxy, make sure it is off. Also try another browser to see whether the issue is browser-specific or system-wide.

The sixteenth step is checking VPN. VPN can help privacy or connect to special systems, but a bad or slow VPN can make the internet look broken. If internet is slow or some websites do not open, turn off VPN temporarily and test again.

The seventeenth step is checking browser cache and cookies. Sometimes only one website fails. This may be caused by cache, cookies, DNS cache or the website itself. Try incognito mode, clear cache, use another browser or open the website on your phone.

The eighteenth step is flushing DNS on Windows. If DNS cache is corrupted, open Command Prompt as administrator and run ipconfig /flushdns. This clears DNS cache and may fix websites failing to open.

You can also use ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew to request a new IP from the router. These are more advanced steps and should be used carefully.

The nineteenth step is checking the network adapter. On a computer, the WiFi or Ethernet adapter may be disabled, the driver may be outdated or settings may be corrupted. If only one computer has the problem, try disabling and enabling the adapter, restarting the computer or updating the network driver.

The twentieth step is checking channel interference. WiFi routers use channels. In areas with many routers, such as apartments or busy offices, channels can interfere with each other. This causes slow or unstable WiFi. Many routers use auto channel, but sometimes manual channel selection helps.

For 2.4GHz, common non-overlapping channels are 1, 6 and 11. For 5GHz, there are more channels and usually less interference. If unsure, use auto channel or ask a technician to analyze the WiFi environment.

The twenty-first step is router firmware update. Routers can have old software with bugs or security issues. Firmware updates may improve stability and security. Only update through the official manufacturer website or router admin panel. Do not cut power during an update.

The twenty-second step is WiFi password security. If your WiFi has a weak password, unauthorized people may connect and use your internet. This can reduce speed and create security risks. Use WPA2 or WPA3 if supported. Avoid simple passwords such as 12345678, house names or phone numbers.

The twenty-third step is changing the default router admin password. Many people change the WiFi password but leave the router admin password as default, such as admin/admin. This is dangerous. Someone on your network can enter router settings and change DNS, passwords or other settings. Change the router admin password.

The twenty-fourth step is using a guest network. If you have a business or many visitors, create a guest WiFi separate from the main WiFi. A guest network gives visitors internet access without giving them access to internal devices such as printers, servers, CCTV or shared files. This is important for office security.

The twenty-fifth step is separating work networks from smart devices. Devices such as CCTV, smart TVs, IoT devices and visitor phones may create risks if they are on the same network as work computers. In advanced setups, use VLANs or separate networks, especially in offices or businesses with important data.

The twenty-sixth step is proper speed testing. Many people test speed while downloads are running or while connected to weak WiFi. For accurate results, test near the router, use a good device, make sure no one is downloading, and if possible test using Ethernet cable. This helps determine whether the issue is the provider speed or WiFi coverage.

The twenty-seventh step is latency and packet loss. Internet may have good speed but still perform badly for video calls or online gaming if latency is high or packet loss exists. High ping causes delays. Packet loss causes audio cuts, frozen video or unstable connection.

Use ping tests to check latency. If ping to the router is high or loses packets, the issue may be inside your WiFi. If ping to the router is fine but ping to the internet is bad, the issue may be the ISP or internet routing.

The twenty-eighth step is using a UPS for the router. If your area has unstable power, the router may restart often. This may look like internet disconnection. A small UPS can keep the router and modem running during short power interruptions or voltage drops.

The twenty-ninth step is network documentation. In an office, write down important network information: ISP, router IP, WiFi name, admin access, static IP devices, printer IP, CCTV IP, DNS settings and provider contacts. Without documentation, every network issue takes longer to solve.

The thirtieth step is knowing when to replace the router. Old routers may be slow, fail to handle many devices, lack security updates or fail to support your internet speed. If you upgrade internet speed but use an old router, you may not receive the speed you pay for. A good router should match your number of users, area size and internet speed.

In general, internet and WiFi problems require step-by-step troubleshooting. Do not start by changing settings without knowing the cause. Ask first: does the issue affect one device or all devices? Is WiFi connected but internet unavailable? Is signal weak? Is DNS working? Did the device receive an IP? What does the router show? Is the ISP having issues?

If you follow this method, you can separate WiFi, router, DNS, IP, DHCP, cable, device and provider problems. This saves time, reduces guessing and helps you explain the issue clearly when contacting a technician or internet provider.

Remember: good WiFi is not only about a password. It requires a good router, proper placement, strong security, working DNS, correct IP settings, enough coverage and proper management of connected devices.
